1972 - Since the 1971 war, Pakistan and India have made only slow progress towards the normalisation of relations. In July 1972, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistani President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto met in the Indian hill station of Simla. They signed the Simla Agreement, by which India would return all Pakistani personnel (over 90,000) and captured territory in the west, and the two countries would "settle their differences by peaceful means through bilateral negotiations." Diplomatic and trade relations were also re-established in 1976.

December 1988 - Prime Ministers Benazir Bhutto and Rajiv Gandhi concluded a pact not to attack each other's nuclear facilities. Agreements on cultural exchanges and civil aviation were also initiated.

1997 - High-level Indo-Pakistan talks resumed after a three-year pause. The Prime Ministers of Pakistan and India met twice and the foreign secretaries conducted three rounds of talks.

February 1999 - Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Indian prime minister, holds a summit with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Lahore.

July 2001 - A summit between General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's president, and Vajpayee, India's prime minister, in Agra in India ends in failure.

September 24, 2004 
President Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh meet for talks in New York on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly.

November 23, 2004 
Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz travels to India for the first time as Chairperson of SARRC.

September 16, 2006
President Musharraf and Prime Minister Singh agree to "put in place an India-Pakistan anti-terrorism institutional mechanism to indentify and implement counter-terrorism initiatives and investigations."

September 25, 2008
Pakistani President Zardari and Indian Prime Minister Singh formally announced the opening of several trade routes between the two countries. The Wagah-Atari road link and the Khokrapar-Munnabao rail link will both be opened to trade, as will the cross-LoC Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakot roads.

June 2009 - Manmohan Singh, the Indian prime minister, and Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan's president, meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Russia. Singh tells Zardari he wants him to ensure armed groups can not operate from Pakistan.

July 16, 2009
The Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan, meeting on the sidelines of a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Egypt, issue a joint statement "charting the way forward in India - Pakistan relations."
